Hi--if I wanted to suggest some other places to donate, could I do that through here? (Former New Yorker, and I know of some places that are doing ground-level work in the city.)

Of course! We want to provide as many donation options possible; as long as they have an online donation component that's available to most countries we'll add them to the list. Thank you!

The New Zealand Red Cross has a donation allocation specifically for the Sandy Appeal if you might like to add them to the list?
Just use the drop-down menu to choose Hurricane Sandy.
http://www.redcross.org.nz/donate

I've found that being in NZ, I can't donate to a lot of the International sites (American Red Cross, etc) so it's good to know that my country is doing their bit :)

p.s. it is in NZ dollars tho, so conversion might be needed to equate to the US dollar?

This may be a stupid question, but how does one go about blanking identifying information in a screencap?
socchan
Nov. 3rd, 2012 04:58 am (UTC)
I only know how with Windows (though it'll probably translate to Linux as well), so if you use a Mac I don't know how much help this will be. I also don't know what your technological literacy level is, so I erred on the side of simple.

1) Take a screencap of your donation receipt. I do this by pressing Ctrl + Prt Scrn.
2) Open an image editing program. Paint works.
3) Paste the screencap into the program. I use Ctrl + V, but there should also be a "Paste" option under the "Edit" command.
4) There should be a "select area" type of option on the sidebar; it will look like a rectangle drawn in dotted lines. Use this to "select" the area(s) where your identifying info appears.
5) Either click "cut"/push Ctrl + X or switch to the "fill" tool (paint bucket) and fill the area with a different color. This will recolor the area you have selected, rendering any identifying info unreadable.
6) Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all identifying info is obscured.

If you have a Mac, you can probably do about the same with whatever image editing program it comes standard with, just by using the clover-leaf-dealie key instead of "Ctrl". Again, though, I work on Windows, so I make no promises.

Hope that helps!

Does anyone know if there's some place you can donate in euros? I know that all those if you want to change the currency between always take some small sum for doing it and I would prefer it going fully to the charity.

You might want to consider putting the Ali Forney Center as an approved charity. They do great work for LGBT youth and their drop in shelter in Chelsea was destroyed.

If someone writes in the Custom Requests: "I am willing to donate.." and I want to sign up as an artist/author for her fandom, have I to sign up in the "Auction Offers" or the "Buy it Now" offers? I want to make the art for this special person and her fandom, is it a "Buy it Now"?

Is it possible to finish my work until 31th of December? It's a bit short until 29th of November...

Sorry for my questions, I have never participated in fandomaid until now.

Nov. 5th, 2012 01:38 am (UTC)
Hello!

No problems for the questions.

If there's a custom request you'd like to fill, then you can just reply to the original comment and we'll take it from there! YAY!

With regard to completion times, the date that's been given [30th of November] is simply the closing date of the auction. It's not at all the date you have to have the work completed by. That's when we'll stop taking bids on auction style offerings. You can negotiate a rough completion date with your 'purchaser' if you like, though most people honestly work on a system of trust. Fandom is pretty awesome like that :)

If you have any other questions, please let me know!

I'd like to suggest Occupy: Sandy Relief as a place to donate. They have been on the ground since Day 1 helping out residents, especially in the Rockaways and Staten Island where there has been very little Red Cross or FEMA presence. They also have an Amazon wishlist if people would like to donate that way.

new york cares is an AWESOME volunteer organization that brings a lot of people together to help out throughout the year and not just in times of crisis (their coats for homeless drive is something i participated in every year). . . and they have a specific sandy donation fund right now.

i am trying to think of other great organizations that take online donations . . .

oh! housingworks is a great HIV/AIDS champion, and i believe at least two of their stores had to close because of the storm. (they run thrift stores/benefit shops which are amazing.) they advocate, educate, and do all sorts of stuff for the community. They certainly aren't going to be getting as many donations in their lower manhattan stores right now, and this time of year is usually big for them.

and callen lorde community health center works with LGBTQ adults and teens and is an amazing resource. they are especially a haven for transgender and bisexual folk. i helped create and establish their health education library and put together safe sex packets when i was a first year at college. they just re-opened, but they were hit seriously. they have a facebook page here: http://www.facebook.com/callenlorde .

these organizations are awesome.

oh! and girls inc. nyc is currently closed as it was in flood zone A. this is a fabulous organization - my friend ran the economic literacy program for years. empowering girls 6-18 to break cycles, be smart, strong and bold and find themselves. great great work. i know they have had to cancel many events and programs already, and the headquarters are crucial to many of their programs.

Hi there! I'm not sure if you wanted to add additional charities, but shelterbox.org is great and is helping Sandy victims (http://shelterbox.org/news_global.php?id=1049) and V Day (Eve Ensler's organization) is going to help as well (vday.org/donate-sandy).

Since I won't be able to begin on my art piece until January (and I made that clear in my comments,) is it okay if the winner of my auction waits until then to make their donation? I'll contact them after I get a reply; they haven't asked, but I don't want to force them to pay now when it'll still be over a month before I can begin.

Either way should be fine. I just want to see what options are available :)

Thanks!
