On October 30th, 2012, several storm fronts off the east coast of the United States of America banded together to create what has become known as the Frankenstorm; a rare weather event that has culminated in the worst storm to hit the east coast in history.

The hurricane at the heart of it, Sandy, had already wreaked havoc on several lower Caribbean nations, causing widespread death and destruction. And now the destruction continues in parts of the United States, with severe power outages, evacuations, fires, building collapses and flooding still causing major problems. Reports of loss of life and extensive damage to property and infrastructure continue to emerge, culminating in a repair bill that is climbing rapidly towards being the highest for a natural disaster in American history.

Following successful fundraising efforts in the past, fandomaid is launching a new campaign to raise funds for any and all areas/countries/regions that have been affected by this series of extreme weather events.

Those making bids or purchase offers will have the option to donate to a wide range of charities that will cover both the United States itself, as well as the Caribbean nations affected earlier. There will be ‘buy it now’, ‘auction’ and 'by request' options made available.

The closing date for the current campaign will be:
9am Australian Eastern Standard Time (ie. Sydney) on Friday the 30th of November
5pm American Eastern Standard Time (ie. New York) on Thursday the 29th of November
10pm Coordinated Universal Time (ie. Greenwich Mean Time) on Thursday the 29th of November

Thank you very much for your time, your talents, and your donations.

From one of your mods, waltzmatildah, and on behalf of the other, kaitybear

At some previous fandom auctions, someone offered a recipe book to anyone who donated $2 on top of their winning bid amount. I've got a crochet pattern I was thinking of doing the same for; where should I put it, and is there a specific way I should word my offer?

If I bid on an auction, is it okay to go ahead and make the donation now instead of waiting to be sure I win? I realize I risk not winning, but I'm okay with that. I'd just like to get the people who need the help the money as soon as possible. Wanted to be sure I wouldn't run into any trouble using a receipt from now instead of from one from 30 November.

Seriously, what can I do to help? It's hitting my home area, I've got nothing to do all day, and I would love to [help]. Did you see the picture of the shark I posted on Facebook??

As a resident of a Sandy affected area (I'm currently with my grandparents as my power is out is my area and my home is slightly flooded and damaged) it really really appreciate you guys doing this and will participate for the unfortinate areas who got worse than me -hugs for all-
Nov. 1st, 2012 03:30 am (UTC)
Good luck getting everything sorted out. I'm sorry to hear you were in an affected area. I'm Australian but I holidayed for six weeks in the affected area not even two months ago so, despite my distance from the devastation, I do feel some odd sense of connection to it.

Hugs back to you!! And thank you for participating despite everything :)

[sidenote: who is in your icon? NM, it's Katniss! Duh, waltzmatildah! I like it! I just looked through your icons to double check it was Katniss and I like A LOT of your icons! I think we probably have similar taste!!]

Nov. 3rd, 2012 10:07 pm (UTC)
Would it be alright if I were to offer up and auction, with a note saying I probably wouldn't be able to begin until January? I really want to help, but I'm about 10% through a big move, and I have other fandom obligations to cram in there somewhere, through November and December.
Nov. 3rd, 2012 11:08 pm (UTC)
So how do I find the people who are actually offering stuff? Thanks so much!
Nov. 3rd, 2012 11:33 pm (UTC)
In the side-bar there are links to the auction, the buy it now and the custom requests. Also, there are links to all three in this actual post too [at the very bottom].

If you're still having trouble, let me know :)
Nov. 5th, 2012 05:54 pm (UTC)
Sorry to be a pain, but I keep seeing these types of auctions, and I still don't quite get how it works. If I want to buy a fic, I can bid on it in the comments. When you win, what happens? I go make a donation in the amount I pledged?

And if I want to volunteer to write or make a video, what do I need to do besides create a comment and deliver the prize? Sorry that I'm last!
Nov. 5th, 2012 08:12 pm (UTC)
No problems at all!!

Basically there's a few ways you can 'buy' a fic, you can bid on someone who has fic up for auction [the auction portion of this doesn't close until the end of the month so you can keep bidding as often as you like until then], or you can 'buy it now' - which basically means there's no bidding wars, you just indicate your interest, wait until it's confirmed by a mod [me!], make your donation and send your confirmation through as per the instructions you'll receive, then get in contact with your author to discuss prompts. You can also leave a custom request that authors etc can look at if you're after something specific or for a rare fandom.

Re: volunteering to write or vid, yep, you basically just sign up using the form indicated in the post [the forms are slightly different depending on whether you want to offer something for auction or for buy it now], pimp your 'thread' at your own journal or tumblr or comm or wherever you want. Once you have a 'purchaser', a mod contacts them as per what I outlined above. Once we have their donation confirmation, we let you know so that you can get creating...

Links to the
are in the sidebar over ------> under FANDOMAID DETAILS.

If that is still confusing, please let me know!!

Just wanted to let you know that I've deleted one of my custom requests :)
the one for icons?

I decided to just go ahead and bid on two icon makers who were offering instead :)
Nov. 7th, 2012 08:49 am (UTC)
Sweet! Thanks for letting me know. Every now and then a post gets deleted and it shifts everything around [not so much an issue at the smaller custom requests thread] and confuses me to no end, so THANK YOU!!
Nov. 10th, 2012 09:42 am (UTC)
I remember that for the Japan earthquake auction there used to be lots of non-fandom specific offers. Baked goods, care packages, knitted stuff ect. (Or at least I think it was here. Hope I'm not confusing comms...) Is that ok to post now, too? I saw that there's a category "other" in the sign up post, but I'm not sure what "other" encompasses. And I haven't really found any offers other than fic/art etc.
Nov. 10th, 2012 09:48 am (UTC)
There was a different comm. going at the time, help_japan I believe it was called. We started as something that was quite fandom-specific back when the Queensland flood disaster hit in Australia, and we're still very much slanted that way [but really only because that's the way it's panned out, to be honest].

We have several auction offers for the 'other' category though.

There's a care package from Finland, and another from Ireland. There are knitted items, cosplay items, art offers, jewellery type items, custom made toys. If you check out the 'Current AUCTION offers by Fandom' link on the side there, at the very bottom of that page are the links to all the non-fandom specific offerings. There aren't many, but there are some.

And if you'd like to add one, some, then PLEASE DO!!

eta: some of the offers are also in the BUY IT NOW category, which I haven't actually made a specific list of yet.

Hi there! Was just wondering if anyone else was having issues leaving bid comments. I tried 3 times on a post to no avail. Hopefully it's just an LJ issue, but wanted to check. :)

Will there be a pinch hit post? I haven't been able to get in touch with the person I bid on yet. (Not that I'm giving up yet, it just may be good to put a notice up now if there will be one so people check later/sign up to do the pinch hitting)
Dec. 7th, 2012 03:55 am (UTC)
We've never done a pinch hit post before, usually I've individually chased up situations where there's been a lack of contact and then tried to find alternate authors in the few instances where it's necessary.

Who is your author/artist? I'll see what I can do.

*sigh* I hate to ask but, will there be any pinch-hits available? I just can't seem to get any sort of response from one of my writers :(

She responded to my comment, I donated, nothing since *headdesk*

This happens every time, why oh why do I keep beating my head against a brick wall thinking someone will actually do what they promise :(
Jan. 31st, 2013 12:31 am (UTC)
Hello! I'm not planning a pinch hit post because I think it gives people a good 'excuse' for not writing their committments, so there'll be nothing formal organised. Having said that, I'm definitely prepared to organise them on a one by one basis [in fact, I've already organised one for this fundraiser].

Give me some more details and I'll see what I can suss out.

PS. I know the feeling. I've donated for seven or eight authors I think, and so far, I've received ONE fic and even that was only a couple of days ago...! Oh well, I was gonna be donating anyway so...
