NEW FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN - SOMALIA FAMINE CRISIS

Following successful fundraising efforts for the Queensland floods crisis and the Japanese tsunami disaser, [info]fandomaid is launching a new campaign in support of the devastating famine that is sweeping Somalia.

PLEDGE CREATIVE WORKS IN ONE OF THREE WAYS (or all three ways!)

(*creative works: fanfiction, original fiction, icons, graphics, art, fanmixes... be as creative as you like)

AUCTION STYLE:
Pledge to write/create for the highest bidder at the end of the two week auction period.

Make your AUCTION offer/s here

BUY IT NOW: Offer fic up to everyone and anyone that confirms payment of their donation. No waiting for the auction to end, this fundraiser style gets donation funds moving straight away.

Make your BUY IT NOW offer/s here

CUSTOM REQUESTS: Commission or create a custom request HERE

All three componenets of this fundraiser begin NOW and will finish up at:
PLEASE NOTE: NEW TIME
9am Australian Eastern Standard Time (ie. Sydney) on Wednesday the 31st of August
3pm American Eastern Standard Time (ie. New York) on Tuesday the 30th of August
11pm Coordinated Universal Time (ie. Greenwich Mean Time) on Tuesday the 30th of August

(for more time zones: The World Clock)

The route for aid entering this country is extremely precarious and as a consequence we will also be accepting donations directed towards aid agencies in the surrounding countries that are currently accepting Somali refugees. Please see our Payment Options link for information that we are attempting to keep updated regarding this situation.

(Extra special thanks to my co-mod, [info]kaitybear, for her extensive research in this area.)

If bidding on an auction item, please wait until you receive confirmation from a mod that you are the highest bidder before making your donation. Once you have then made your donation, please email your livejournal name, your author/artist's livejournal name AND your de-identified confirmation receipt to floodreliefviafic@hotmail.com. Once this confirmation has been received, the mods will contact your author/artist and let them know to get creating.

If bidding on a 'buy it now' item, please make your donation immediately and then email your livejournal name, your author/artist's livejournal name and your de-identified confirmation receipt to floodreliefviafic@hotmail.com. Once this confirmation has been received, the mods will contact your author/artist and let them know to get creating.

PLEASE LEAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS HERE.

Re: PLEASE LEAVE ALL QUESTIONS IN A REPLY HERE

Oooh, good idea... I've contemplated that premise before but never really been too sure how to organise it. If you can point me in the direction of one you've seen previously, or are happy to give me a quick run-down on how it works, then I'd definitely be happy to add a request post.

Hi, sorry for the late reply, I wasn't home yesterday :O

Here are two examples of Request pages from other auctions, they follow the same basic format so you shouldn't have too much trouble figuring out something to use :)

Re: PLEASE LEAVE ALL QUESTIONS IN A REPLY HERE

I don't want to decry your good intentions....far from it. but I do ask myself why you all feel that you have to 'buy' something on LJ in order to donate the amount you are obviously willing to give directly to the organisations trying to get something done now
In the time it takes for the work to be created; the auctions to take place, the money to be received and then sent to the charity chose...hundreds will have died.
I don't doubt your good will
I'm not denigrating the organizers of this comm....I'm just pleading for the cause.
Please....think about how much you will be willing to bid for a story/artwork etc....and just send it to one of the many accredited agencies out there trying to save lives NOW

Re: PLEASE LEAVE ALL QUESTIONS IN A REPLY HERE

[info]helpthesouth and others allowed bidders/donors to buy LJ Chairty v-gifts or show screencaps of proof of donation to Red Cross/others directly to the authors/artists in order to get their fic/fanart. As far as I know, that worked well and that way the donations were made directly to charity foundations.

Re: PLEASE LEAVE ALL QUESTIONS IN A REPLY HERE

Hi there,

As far as I know, there isn't a v-gift for Somalia at this stage (though, should they create one then we'll definitely encourage people to use that method. We've used them in the past where they've been available).

Donations are to be made directly to charity foundations in this fundraiser also. We've provided a list of links with several suggestions (Doctors without Borders, Red Cross, the UN Food Programme etc).

Does this make sense? If not, please don't hesitate to ask for clarification.

Thank you!

Re: PLEASE LEAVE ALL QUESTIONS IN A REPLY HERE

Hi, I don't write, or draw, or make icons or anything, but I do cross-stitch small game sprites and things (like this ) - am I able to offer up a few custom ones under auction or BINs? Just asking as I've not seen any other forms of art like this on fandomaid before, so I wanted to check it was still allowed.

Re: PLEASE LEAVE ALL QUESTIONS IN A REPLY HERE

Yeah, go for it! We've not had people offering this in the past (though not because we've said no to it, just because it's never come up) but this time we actually have quite a few, well, okay, so maybe about three! Haha! But that's still quite a few in comparison to none previously so...!

Anyway, tl:dr? YES! Go for it! I'd recommend adding the link you've provided here to your post (which is probably a really obvious thing to say so ignore me!). Argh, it's after midnight here, I blame that!

Thank you!

Re: PLEASE LEAVE ALL QUESTIONS IN A REPLY HERE

Hi, I just bid on a BUY IT NOW option while I've also bid on someone in the normal thread; do I have to send the buy it now money to a charity or can I wait till the other auction ends and send in the grand total ?

Re: PLEASE LEAVE ALL QUESTIONS IN A REPLY HERE

Hi there! Good question! Totally up to you, but it does make more sense to make one payment at the end so feel free to wait until then.

I'll put a note next to your name in my spreadsheet of doooooooom that you'll make the payment once the auction ends incase you 'win' another author.

Thanks!!

Re: PLEASE LEAVE ALL QUESTIONS IN A REPLY HERE

It indeed would! I'm going to wait until the end then when everything finishes and that I won more auctions :D it's just a couple of days now anyways - do I have to contact the writer and tell her of my plan too ?

Re: PLEASE LEAVE ALL QUESTIONS IN A REPLY HERE

I asked on the Payment Options page if a donation to Lutheran World Relief, my charity of choice, would be acceptable, but got no reply. Since I won the auction, I kinda need to know. (Basically: LWR has history in the area, is very good at working with/through local groups who know what the real needs are, and is very good at keeping the overhead to a minimum so that as much money as possible goes where it is needed.)

I would like to make my donation through Lutheran World Relief. They are on the ground, focus on sustainable development as well as direct aid, and I can get my donation doubled by my life insurance provider, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

I know that not every faith based organization is reputable, but LWR has the same rating as several of the other organizations on your list, including MSF. They are working through the Lutheran World Federation, which is directly managing the Dabaab refugee camp in Kenya.

Please let me know if this will be an acceptable donation. Thanks for your hard work!

Hi there! Thanks heaps for running this by us first. We're really trying to keep on top of the agencies donated to simply because the situation with getting aid into Somalia has been so difficult (which is also why we've been accepting agencies working in Kenya and Ethiopia in particular).

It's fine for you to donate to the organisation you've outlined above. Again, thanks for checking and also, thanks for participating!!
